Pilot multi-method study to explore evaluation options of the Fusion EXPO travelling exhibition Findings from Spain

The Fusion Expo (henceforth ‘the Expo’), a travelling exhibition owned by the EU/EFDA (www.fusion-expo.si/), provides a learning and public information resource about fusion power for lay publics in Europe. Since the Expo was first designed, a considerable volume of evidence on public understanding of, and reasoning about, fusion power has been assembled by EFDA-SERF funded research (e.g. Tosato, 2005; Prades et al, 2009a; 2009b; Horlick-Jones et al, in press). In addition, recent sociological work of an ethnographic nature has provided important insights into the actual functionality of science centres and museum-based science exhibitions in naturally-occurring settings (discussed in Heath and vom Lehn, 2008). In the light of these research developments, it is perhaps now timely to reconsider the design of the Expo, the ways in which it is used, and its effectiveness.
